Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicted in August of this year that Apple could finally release an iPhone model with an on-screen Touch ID system supplied by Qualcomm in 2021. This is after many years of shunning that tech while its Android rivals have increasingly been adopting in-display fingerprint sensors.

Today, however, a fresh report suggests that the rollout of iPhone with that system could take place as soon as 2020. Apple is reportedly set to meet with representatives from GIS, a Taiwanese manufacturer of touchscreen systems, to talk about potential development of an iPhone with in-display sensor. In addition, the Cupertino-based tech giant is said to be planning to launch that model next year.

Just like earlier rumors, Apple is believed to be planning on using a Qualcomm-built ultrasonic fingerprint sensor system. Coincidentally, Qualcomm today announced a new ultrasonic fingerprint sensor that’s 17 times larger than before. The report, however, did not rule out the possibility that this plan could be moved to 2021 as initially rumored.

In September, Apple was also reported to be testing an in-display fingerprint technology. A report from Bloomberg claimed at the time that the company would use both the Face ID and the new fingerprint sensor together for a future iPhone model.
