Zoom and Skype are among the most popular video chatting options right now, but Google also offers its own alternative dubbed Meet. What was meant to be available only for organizations is now open to the public and can now be accessed on your desktop or mobile device (Android and iOS) and is also embedded in the Gmail app. Let’s see how you can set up, or join a video conference in Google Meet.

Create a Meeting on Your PC

The free version of Google Meet requires that you log in with your free Google account. If you don’t have one yet, you can create one here.

Before proceeding further, you should also know that video calls have a 60-minute cap, so keep that in mind in order to schedule your meetings accordingly.

Now if you want to host the meeting yourself, head to meet.google.com on your PC and click the green “New Meeting” button, then select one of the three options available.

To start a new video meeting immediately, simply click on “Start an Instant Meeting.” After you’ve calibrated your camera, select “Join now.” You’ll be transferred to the video meeting area promptly. From here you can “Add Other Participants” or start sharing your screen via the Present button.

Alternatively, if you want to schedule a meeting, you should select the “Schedule in Google Calendar” option and add the details of the conference using the form. When you are done, click Schedule.

If you want to invite people to your meeting in real time, select the “Get a Meeting Link to Share.” This allows you to simply send it (via email or chat app) to the people you want to speak to. You can also add them manually.

Alternatively, from your Gmail account on your PC, you can click on the “Start a Meeting” option located in the lower-left side of the display. A new window will open, and you can start inviting people from there.

Join a Meeting on Your PC

If someone sent you an email invitation to join a meeting, or you’ve received a code/link via one of the chat apps that you use, then you can use that info to join a meeting.

Simply go to https://meet.google.com/ and enter the code or use the link you’ve been provided in a new tab. Alternatively, you can simply click on the link.

From the Gmail app, you’ll need to click on the “Join a Meeting” option under Meet. Here you’ll be asked to input the code so you can join the meeting.

Create or Join a Meeting Using the Mobile App

To get started, open the app and approve the permissions required for Meet to work, then tap on the New Meeting button at the top of the display. Next, you’ll have to choose one of the three options we discussed above.

If you’ve selected the “Start New Meeting” option, you should immediately see a new conference window open on your screen. From here you’ll be prompted to “Share Invites” either via email or social apps. You can also copy-paste the meeting link, for example, in your company’s internal chat client.

The meeting will remain active even if you leave the dedicated window and open or check other apps. To exit the meeting, simply swipe down on the notification bar and tap on the “Leave the Meeting” option.

Alternatively, if you’ve received a code, you can simply tap on the “Join with a Code” button in the app to start chatting with your co-workers. By the way, even if all you have is an invitation link, you can derive the code from it – it’s the string of letters that comes after .com.

If you’re a Gmail user, you don’t really need to download the mobile app on your phone. Simply open the Gmail app and tap on the Meet button at the bottom of the display to get things started. From there you will be able to either select the option to start a New Meeting or Join with a Code.

Tired of Seeing Meet in Gmail? Get Rid of It

Don’t want to keep seeing the Meet button in Gmail? You can get rid of it by following these steps on your phone:

1. Open the Gmail app.

2. Tap on the hamburger menu in the upper left corner.

3. Scroll down until you find Settings.

4. Select your account.

5. Scroll down until you find the Meet section.

6. Untick the “Show the Meet Tab for Video calling” option.

Alternatively, follow a slightly different path on your PC:

1. Open Gmail on your computer.

2. Click on the Gear icon in the upper-right corner.

3. Click on “See All Settings.”

4. Select Chat and Meet (last option).

5. Select the Hide the Meet section in the main menu.
