A US Capitol police officer died Friday during an altercation after a driver rammed into the north barricade of the U.S. Capitol, law enforcement officials confirmed.

Officer William ‘Billy’ died Friday from injuries he sustained during the attack, The U.S Capitol Police said in a statement.

“Officer Evans had been a member of the United States Capitol Police for 18 years. He began his USCP service on March 7, 2003, and was a member of the Capitol Division’s First Responder’s Unit,” the statement read. “Please keep Officer Evans and his family in your thoughts and prayers.”

The suspect was killed, police confirmed at a press conference.

According to ABC News, the suspect was later identified as 25-year-old Noah Green.

After reportedly leaving the vehicle and brandishing a knife, he began to run toward Capitol police and he was shot.

“I just ask that the public continue to keep U.S. Capitol Police and their families in your prayers,” Capitol Police Acting Chief Yogananda Pittman said. “This has been an extremely difficult time for U.S. Capitol Police after the events of Jan. 6 and now the events that have occurred here today.”

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi ordered that flags at the Capitol be at half-staff due to the police officer’s death, her Deputy Chief of Staff, Drew Hammill, wrote on Twitter.

The United States Capitol is on lockdown due to an “external security threat.”

The United States Capitol Police responded to the North Barricade vehicle access point along Consitution Avenue for reports that someone “rammed a vehicle” into two officers.

Both officers were injured and a suspect is in custody.

Police closed parts of Constitution Avenue in response to the threat.

This threat comes months after rioters stormed the Capitol in a deadly insurrection.
