The New Mutants director Josh Boone has said the groundbreaking same-sex romance is the most exciting part of the film.
The upcoming X-Men spinoff will feature a relationship between superheroes Rahne Sinclair (Maisie Williams) and Danielle Moonstar (Blu Hunt).
The New Mutants was filmed in 2017 but had its release stalled by Disney’s acquisition of Fox. It will finally hit cinemas in the UK on 4 September.
Cinema-goers can expect plenty of visual effects and action sequences – but Boone is most excited to see the same-sex love story play out on screen.
The New Mutants director is ‘excited’ to watch the same-sex romance play out on screen.
“People ask me what are you excited to see, and yes, [there’s] all the cool visual effects and the big fights at the end and all that,” Bonne told SyFy.
“But just seeing these two girls under the dome looking up is really cool to see in a movie. So I’m just excited to see it as much as the action.”
The director also reflected on the decision to cast Williams and Hunt as lovers in the upcoming film.
“I had them lay down on the floor together, just like as if they were looking up at the stars like they are in the movie… So we did really act that scene out the way we did when we shot it,” he said.
Maisie Williams said it’s ‘really important’ queer relationships are represented in film.
Williams has previously opened up about the powerful on-screen romance, saying she was “excited” to be playing a queer superhero.
Speaking on a panel at Comic Con @ Home, Williams said it is essential that queer love stories are allowed to play out on screen.
“It was really wonderful to be able to see a relationship look like this,” she said.
“In the typically quite masculine world of superheroes, it was just lovely to see these two fragile women who just protect one another and bring light out in each other, but I’m glad that the fans are so excited for it because I think it’s realty important to see relationships like this.”
She continued: “I think at the heart of it is just this really lovely love story. It just brings it back to reality, I think.”
