The toddler, 21-month-old Kayden Swann, was sitting in the back seat of one of the cars when he was caught in the middle of the crossfire.

Swann was rushed to a Lurie Children’s Hospital where doctors placed him in a medical coma, ABC 7 Chicago reported.

Police arrested 43-year-old Jushawn Brown of Englewood and he faces a felony charge of unlawful use of a weapon.

Brown, who had the toddler in the back seat of his car, began shooting at another driver. When the other driver shot back, one of the bullets hit the toddler.

Swann’s condition has worsened since he was brought to the hospital, the station reported.

The number of shootings and murders in Chicago spiked dramatically in 2020.

The year ended with 769 homicides and people are calling for new strategies to combat the violence.

BNC’s Eric Cox spoke to community activists combatting the rising number of shootings.
